It’s a Natural choice for a mensch!
Being a bit yid myself & having just organized a few gigs at my mate Matty Lanes restaurant Mamasita’s in melbourne I thought it an opportune time to post this up for all to enjoy..
Besides having a great title it is a killer mambo & works it’s magic with a combo of NY heat & Jewish cooool.
I’m playing at Mamasita’s on:
the 9th september & 1st October 9-12pm
Level 1 / 11 Collins St. Melbourne..
Ray was a member of the group the beginning of the end & composed the funk classic ‘Funky Nassau’… referring to the Bahamas of course & not that other county of the not so beautiful Long Island..
This Alston 45 is relatively unknown & pretty hard to score, but whatever.. here it is now.
ENJOY!
A rather crappy iphone shot of Jules Inkswel, Jumbo Williams & Al Kent digging through some of my disco boogie 12′s..
Trying to get this stuff off the floor & on some shelves so i can set up the studio gear in here & get back to recording.. I hate downtime but shit is everywhere & theres not much i can do right now but plod forth.. stay tuned.
This 12inch is a stormer..
I love this soul B-side perhaps more than the dancefloor tune on the A-side.. & thats saying a lot cos it comes real close to a Greyship Daviz style funk bomb..
BUT this side has a building, beautiful appeal in the vocals that just lifts the listener higher as the song progesses.. its Magic!
Some kind soul was nice enough to upload the B-side from my first 7inch “Rolling with a planet”.
This record came out in 2009 & the vocal side got selected by Radio Nova in Paris for their compilation of 2010 ‘coffret’.
Needless to say i was pretty happy with that..
I also found a pretty funny rundown of the record by a blogger by the name of steady bloggin’ which you can find here..
Currently I’m working on a part 3 of this record which I hope to be the definitive version of the recording & will feature as around a 6minute take on my upcoming album..
Mighty Highness teams up with the Black Jesus Experience to present a 12inch release entitled Arada / Brave New World.
Straight off the back of an Australian tour with Mulatu, BJX hit the studio to record the numbers for this release.. IF you listen close you might hear a guest spot whose name i can’t mention.. In any case every musician shines on this wonderful record.
It took Cassawarrior & myself some time to put this little project together & i hope everyone gets the heart that went into this. I think it represents new directions in music & that for me is what MHR is about.. I don’t use the term ‘new’ lightly, but i think i’m fairly well versed in what’s come before & i haven’t heard anything yet that melds ethiopian jazz, dub & hip hop… & does it in such a subtle & masterful fashion.
This is a great record & i’m proud to be a part of supporting quality. Thankyou BJX
So not really a vinyl post here, but i don’t limit myself to vinyl.. If somethings good & can’t be had on wax, it’s still got to be mine.
This version of ‘Third World Girl’ is from the superb reissue of Marvin Gaye’s MIDNIGHT LOVE album that came out a few years back. It includes outtakes, acapellas & demo versions of songs on the record. It’s absolutely essential listening.
I highly highly hugely recommend all the CD reissues of Marvin’s albums that have come out in recent years.
Here My Dear – essential
In our lifetime – essential
What’s going on – essential
I want you – essential
& of course Midnight Love – essential
I love this reggae version.. It sounds as though Marvin messed around with the key bass, slowed the tape a bit & added a skanky guitar. Its just a fantastic version.
